Employee Benefits

Welcome to the American Red Cross employee benefits program, BenefitsAdvantage. BenefitsAdvantage is a part of the Red Cross total compensation package that includes your Retirement (pension) and Savings Plan 401(k), leave benefits and compensation. Here are the summary of benefits available:

EFFECTIVE DATE

Coverage under BenefitsAdvantage is effective the first of the month following your date of hire.

LIFE INSURANCE

Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance is 1½ times your annual salary. The unit pays the cost of this coverage. Optional supplemental life, spouse/domestic partner and/or child life coverages may be elected to provide extra protection. MetLife is the life insurance administrator.

MEDICAL & PRESCRIPTION DRUG

You will be offered one or more of the following medical options: Blue Cross Blue Shield (CareFirst) Premier and Standard Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), and Blue Cross Blue Shield (CareFirst) Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO). In some states Kaiser* HMO will be offered as another medical option.

Combined with you medical plan, your prescription drug benefit covers a wide array of generic and most brand name drugs. Options include retail and a mail order pharmacy.

DENTAL

Dental coverage provides for preventative, basic and major dental services. You will be offered the MetLife PPO which provides in and out of network benefits. Alternatively, under the Aetna Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO) all services must be received by a network provider. Availability of the DMO is based on your home zip code.

VISION

Comprehensive vision insurance covering eye exams, lenses and frames is available through Spectera/UnitedHealthcare Vision.

HEALTHCARE & DEPENDENT CARE SPENDING ACCOUNTS

You can reduce your tax liabilities when you contribute to the spending accounts. The spending accounts allows you to use your before-tax dollars to pay for eligible health care and dependent care expenses. Your Spending Account is the administrator.

DISABILITY INSURANCE

Disability coverage provides continued income equal to 60% of your base salary if you are a regular full-time employee, certified disabled and cannot work. The long-term disability plan pays benefits after the 90 day waiting period. MetLife is the disability administrator.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)

The EAP offers confidential counseling and referrals for life events for you and your immediate family members. The EAP is administered by Cigna Behavioral Health. All employees on payroll are eligible for this benefit, including all part-time employees and temporary employees. The unit pays the full cost of the EAP.

GROUP LEGAL

A group legal plan, MetLaw, is offered to assist with wills, powers of attorney, living trust (no tax planning), uncontested adoption, document review, identity theft defense, sale or purchase of a primary residence, in addition to unlimited telephone and office consultations on many other personal legal issues.
